The New South Wales Group Empowers Local Women to Share Their Skills And Craft With The World

When farm girl Annabel Scott, owner of a local farm in Yass, New South Wales, discovered how difficult it is to get a knitted jumper for her kid, she was flabbergasted.

As someone involved in the wool industry for the fourth generation, it struck her how underrated wool is today. Without being knowledgeable of knitting on her own, she decided to get the community involved.

We don’t have anyone in our family that knits and unless you have a little craft shop in your local town they [woolen clothes] can be hard to come by,” Annabel Scott said, when asked what motivated her to found Wool for Love.

With many elderly women in the community being passionate knitters, it was easy for Annabel to find enough enthusiasts to pick up the challenge.

Since plenty of them have already been knitting for different generations in their families, offering them an extra incentive was the sole ingredient missing for success.

The 20 women involved in the process are wool growers themselves or part of families of wool growers. Their passion for knitting does not only offer them an opportunity to do something productive, but also contributes to their community’s wellbeing.

All the knitted clothes sold by Wool for Love use 100% Australian wool. Their products are already selling like hot cakes all over the world, and some of them even reached distant places, like Switzerland.

It’s a very relaxing thing to do and we get some pocket money along the way, none of us are in it to make a fortune,”  says Dee Bush.

She is one of the knitters involved with Wool for Love. Now she is glad to be doing something with her lifetime passion. Besides selling knitted clothes, the women really love being able to get together and exchange ideas on patterns, along with the latest gossip.
