In this video tutorial you will learn how to make yarn Dorset buttons. These beautiful buttons are a great way of sprucing up your knitting projects.
In fact, in just 3 simple steps you can transform some of your scrap yarn into pretty, colorful buttons:
- 1st Step – Wrap the ring
- 2nd Step – Making a spider’s web
- 3 rd Step – Backstitch weaving
This great video tutorial has been put together by Kristen over at Studio Knits.
Use any type of ring to make these fun buttons – recycling something is always a great idea! You can use a ring made from literally any material. The original Dorset buttons were in fact made from bone.
However, if you are planning to attach the buttons to a garment, you should make sure they will not be damaged by water when washed.
In her tutorial, Kristen has used some key rings. You will also need a tapestry needle.
In addition to the video tutorial, there is also a photo tutorial available on Kristen’s website. You can find it here: Dorset Yarn Button Photo Tutorial
Finally, you can also find a wide range of knitting tutorials here: Knitting Tips & Tricks.

Love this. I’ve been making and teaching Dorset Buttons, many styles for over 50 years. There’s a great history going back to the 1600 s and worth looking for on the web.
